Good to see you're posting! Check out Gary Faigin's book The Artist's Complete Guide to Facial Expression - he's an amazing teacher as well (he was my mentor in art school)
I have a little side question, that has nothing to do with the post, which of course is a very good one :)I'm curious are you the same Ian Mccaig who has drawn the illustrations for the "City of Thieves" bamebook from 1983?
I am that artist, indeed! Though it's Iain with the extra 'i', which I believe is the Scottish version of the name.I was lucky enough to work with Ian Livingstone (without the extra 'i') during the genesis of the Fighting Fantasy gamebooks back in the early 80's.It was a great break for a young illustrator, for which I am forever grateful.
That is just awesome.Your work made me such a great impression when i was little boy. I watched those for hours.Recently i have bought the book from a bookshop for old books, just because of the illustrations. Got to say that after so many years i feel the same enjoyment watching them as i felt back then.Great respect.
are all of these tutorials in your shadowline book as wel?
Your drawings remind me, in the best possible way, of John R. Neill's "Oz" Book illustrations. At any moment I expect to see old Ruggedo, the Nome King, peering out at me...Great tutorial, thanks so much for sharing your expertise!Much appreciation :)PS I was at your Story lecture for the Art Institute of Inland Empire, and you are very funny and inspirational in person. Thanks for that, too!
Thanks a lot for your awsome drawing tips :) Im a big fan of your style :) Could you post something about how you ink? I love your illustrations from the Fighting Fantasy books, but ive always wondered how you made those. Which pens you use and how you make shadows, crosshatching etc.Keep up your awsome work, and keep posting here:)
Thank you for posting up all of these great bits of drawing wisdom......now I am off with a pencil to attempt to etch them into my brain.
jesus, this is such a treat
thanks a lot for sharing your art and your tips with us.very usefull!!!
Wonderful stuff Iain! I met you back at FaerieCon in 2008 (Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell's friend-though not the one who looks like Jesus) and I recall that you said that you were mentoring a number of students and were booked up for new ones for a decade or more into the future. Well, this will be a great way to mentor MANY more of us (in a fashion), even if it is a bit more of a one way dialog. BTW- B&J LOVED the book! I'm so glad that you'll be joining them at the IMC this year. You'll have a blast!
so glad your posting !
Hi Iain-I attended a lecture of your in Denmark some years ago.Great to see your blog.I'll follow you. :)All the best-Jamie Holmes.
Very cool! Thank you so very much!
Besides all the other reasons I admire and am thankful to you I recently found out you actually worked on the old Monkey Island... is it really true?!?! (in the excitement of the discovery i even wrote about it http://artsygamer.com/iain-mccaig-worked-on-monkey-island/ )i never would have imagined somebody of your caliber working on not only games but particularly games which such technical limitations in both resolution and colors... wow! It's very exciting to me personally because while I admire VERY much your spirit and goodness and your legacy of portraying powerful and interesting good when evil seems to be so easy to do, and I was very much encouraged by your words and attitude (me iz less talented), I always associated you with the high end movie business while it's my personal dream to get into the games creation world... so this is a historic day! :D
Robin Williams, Jeff Daniels (?) and who does the other mouth belong to... I wondered if it was Val Kilmer maybe...
Wonderful stuff. Super informative, easy to digest, and just made crystal clear. Thanks again for being an inspiration!
Wow! Il s'agit d'un super blog, avec beaucoup de superbe travail.
You are my favourite artist and best source of inspiration. You've ruined Star Wars for me - everytime I watch it now I'm just analysing the art behind it!! :)I love learning from your Gnomon DVD's and analysing your techniques in Shadowline, and it's great you're adding some little tutorials to your site which I hope you continue to do. I do hope someday I can see you in person, will you be adding what events you will be making an appearance at in your blog?
i want to google +1 and i cant so i will post that +1 here.
yeah Iain mc caig , one of my hero on blogspot ! dats good !
Fantastic stuff! You obviously mastered the art of human smiles! Bravo sir!
